Location Description
Sümeg is a town in Veszprém county, the centre of the Sümeg district. There are several historical monuments here, the most famous being the Sümeg Castle, the Bishop's Palace, the birthplace of Sándor Kisfaludy and the prehistoric flint mine excavated in the outskirts. It is situated in the south-western part of the Bakony, in the valley connecting the Tapolca basin with the Kisalföld

The main road 84, which connects Lake Balaton and Sopron, passes through the administrative area and even through the inhabited area, making it the most important road access route from both directions. The main road also used to run through the town centre, for some time it has been slightly bypassing it from the east, since then two parts of the old route have been part of other minor (four-digit) secondary roads, and the town centre part is a municipal road.

It can also be reached by road from several other directions: from Győr, Devecser (and thus Veszprém) on road 7324, from Keszthely on road 7327, from Zalaegerszeg on road 7328, and from Kisgörbő and Sümegcsehi on road 7333. It is linked to Tapolca by road 7319, to Nyirád by road 7321, and to Sümegpraga by the minor road 73 159.

Among its separate parts, Ilonamajor and Jánosmajor are located on the 7324 and 7327 roads respectively; Sarvaly can be reached from the Sümegprága road and Nyírlakpuszta from the 84 main road, each with an unnumbered access road.

Among the domestic railway lines, the Balatonszentgyörgy-Tapolca-Ukk railway line is concerned, the Ukk-Sümeg section of which was built in 1888-89, and the Sümeg-Tapolca section in 1891. The line had three stops within its boundaries: the Sümeg Bazaltbánya stop, south of the built-up area near the Sümegprága highway, then the Sümeg station on the north-western edge of the town centre, and finally the Nyírlak stop on the northern outskirts of the town (the latter has now been closed).
