Planning to take the Aranykalászos Gazda course, or invest in farmland?

In Hungary, the purchase of agricultural land is one of the most strictly regulated areas. Having the funds is not enough: buyers must also meet strict statutory requirements. Many people are unaware of who may acquire land, how much they may own, and under what conditions.

Here are the key rules you should definitely know before you get started! 👇

  1. Who can and who CANNOT buy agricultural land?
  • Yes: Only Hungarian citizens and citizens of European Union Member States (natural persons) may acquire ownership.
  •  No: As a general rule, companies, businesses and limited liability companies (Kft.)
  • CANNOT purchase agricultural land! Ownership is generally reserved for private individuals.
  1. How much land can you buy? (The key 1-hectare rule)

The amount of land you may acquire depends on your qualifications and your registration status:

  • If you are NOT officially registered as a farmer: You may own a maximum of 1 hectare (10,000 m²) of agricultural land in total. If you already own a 6,000 m² enclosed garden plot, you may acquire no more than an additional 4,000 m².
  • If you are a registered farmer: In this case, the total area of land you own may reach a maximum of 300 hectares.
  1. How can you become a registered farmer?
  • Relevant qualification: An agricultural or forestry qualification (e.g. the widely chosen Aranykalászos Gazda course, or a related secondary- or higher-level diploma).
  • Practical experience: Alternatively, you must be able to prove at least 3 years of agricultural activity carried out in Hungary at your own risk.
  1. What commitments do you make when buying land?

Buying agricultural land is not only a right, but also a serious obligation. By signing the contract, you must undertake that:

  1. You farm the land yourself and do not transfer its use to another person.
  2. You comply with your land-use obligations (you may not allow the land to become overgrown).
  3. For 5 years from the date of acquisition, you do not use the land for another purpose (e.g. you do not withdraw it from agricultural cultivation).
